True Profit by State

See Lead Distro AI profit, revenue, cost, and margin broken down by US state. Spot underperforming geos and double down on winners with per-state attribution.

What This Does

The True Profit by State view in the Reports Center shows revenue, cost, profit, and margin for each US state across any date range. Geographic performance varies dramatically — finding underperforming geos and winners is one of the highest-leverage analyses you can run.

Why "True" Profit?

Profit calculations use cost_entries as the single source of truth — including synced Meta ad spend attributed to the leads from each state. So a Texas lead's cost reflects the actual Meta spend on Texas-targeted Meta campaigns, not a blended account average. This is the difference between Profit by State and a naive 'lead count × buyer price' calculation.

Common Use Cases

  • Identify your winners — which states have the highest profit per lead? Concentrate Meta budget there.
  • Spot the losers — which states have the highest return rate or lowest acceptance rate? Either reduce Meta spend or upgrade buyer relationships in those states.
  • Buyer pricing negotiation — show a buyer their state-by-state acceptance rate to negotiate per-state pricing tiers.
  • Geo expansion decisions — entering a new state? Look at adjacent states' profit-per-lead to set expectations.

Interpreting the Data

PatternWhat it suggests
High volume + high marginYour strongest geo — concentrate budget
High volume + low marginCost issue (Meta CPL high) or pricing issue (buyer underpaying for the state)
Low volume + high marginUnderserved geo — opportunity to scale traffic
Low volume + low marginAvoid — small market that's also unprofitable
High return rateLead quality or buyer intake issue — investigate

Combine Profit by State with Insights Drill-Down — once you've identified a low-margin state, group by State × Buyer in Drill-Down to find which specific buyer in that state is dragging margin down. The fix is usually buyer-specific (re-price, replace, or drop), not state-wide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Profit by State use the lead's state field or the buyer's state?
The lead's state field — set on ingest from the supplier or normalized from zip code. This is the most useful framing: it answers 'where is my traffic from?' rather than 'which buyer is in which state?' (which is rarely useful since buyers often cover multi-state areas).
Can I see profit by zip code instead of state?
Not natively in this view — zip-level granularity is on the roadmap. For per-zip analysis today, use Insights Drill-Down with the State filter narrowed to one state, then export to CSV and pivot by zip externally. Zip-level Profit by State within the dashboard is a frequent request and will land in a future release.
How does Profit by State handle multi-state buyers?
Each lead's revenue is attributed to the lead's state field — not the buyer's primary state. So a multi-state buyer's leads split across the states their leads came from. Useful when negotiating with buyers: show them their California revenue vs Texas revenue separately even though they take both.
Does Profit by State include Meta ad spend?
Yes for Variable-cost suppliers wired to a Meta pixel — Lead Distro AI pulls daily Meta spend and attributes it to the leads from each state. This is the canonical 'true profit' calculation. For Fixed-cost suppliers, the fixed cost is attributed per lead. For Revenue Share, cost is calculated per lead from buyer revenue.
Can I export Profit by State to a CSV for further analysis?
Yes — every Reports view supports CSV export. The export includes State, Lead Count, Revenue, Cost, Profit, Margin, Acceptance Rate, Return Rate per row. Useful for cross-referencing with external data like state-level demographic info or competitive density.
How often does the state-level data refresh?
Near real-time for lead and revenue data (sub-30 seconds). Cost data refreshes per the Meta sync cron (every 6 hours) — so today's cost-attributed Profit by State numbers are accurate as of the last sync, not the live moment. End-of-day numbers are exact after the final daily sync.
